As part of its State of Education Initiative, Discovering U offers the Parent Leadership and Advocacy Training Program for parents, caregivers, and community supporters in the Houston area. This family and community-focused programming provides hands-on, real-world learning to help parents, caregivers, and community supporters develop leadership skills that will enable them to effectively advocate for the needs of children in their local schools and communities.
Pursuant to section 26.001 of the Texas Education Code, Parents are partners with educators, administrators, and school district boards of trustees in their children’s education. Parents shall be encouraged to actively participate in creating and implementing educational programs for their children.
Although state statute asserts that parents should participate in educational decision-making for their children, it is rarely the case that parents, families, and community members are involved or engaged in local schools.
All too often, districts and schools fail to invest time and resources to welcome parents and families as contributors to educational programs in any way. Instead, many parents, particularly parents of color and parents whose children attend schools in underserved communities are not involved and not engaged in decision-making.
This is despite research indicating that parent involvement is directly associated with higher grades, higher math and reading achievement, lower rates of behavioral problems, and lower likelihood of high school dropouts and truancy.
Parent, family, and community engagement is extremely low or non-existent for many Houston-area schools and districts, and Discovering’ U’s Parent Leadership and Advocacy Program seeks to change that through education and enrichment.
